ATLASSIAN CENTRAL – STRUCTURAL TIMBER INSTALLATION
Oriel is proud to have delivered the CLT and Glulam structural installation for Atlassian Central; one of the most significant mass timber projects ever undertaken.
Standing 39 storeys above Sydney’s Tech Central precinct, Atlassian Central is recognised as the world’s tallest hybrid timber commercial building and represents a major milestone in the evolution of sustainable high-rise construction.
Our team installed the precision-engineered Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) floor panels together with the Glulam beams and columns that form the building’s innovative timber structure. Every element demanded meticulous planning, millimetre accuracy and seamless coordination with the wider project team.
Projects of this scale are exceptionally rare. Combining mass timber with structural steel and concrete, Atlassian Central demonstrates how engineered timber can be successfully delivered in complex commercial skyscrapers while significantly reducing embodied carbon.
Our approach combined design support with just-in-time logistics, optimised stillages/sledges, certified lifting and rigging, and tight onsite sequencing to install timber efficiently through a fast-moving high-rise programme and complex trade interfaces.

A key feature of Oriel’s construction methodology was the design and implementation of a bespoke gantry and bridge crane system for each habitat—delivering the primary means of controlled lifting, safe sequencing, and efficient material movement through the high-rise programme. With the restrictive floorplate footprint limiting conventional Maeda crane solutions, the gantry/bridge system enabled predictable handling across multiple workfaces, supporting program acceleration when required.
A final major hurdle was the need to construct each habitat before facade installation, leaving the mass timber exposed to the elements for extended periods. To maintain timber performance and manage this risk, we implemented a dedicated moisture protection and condition-monitoring process across the full lifecycle; from reception of containers at the storage facility, through months of laydown and storage, and then throughout transport, staged delivery, lifting/handling, installation, and close-out to handover.
All in all, this was a showcase of Oriel’s integrated delivery capability. Combining engineering-led temporary works, controlled lifting systems, installation on multiple fronts, and tight logistics to maintain programme.
