CROSS LAMINATED TIMBER STRUCTURES

The emergence of CLT as a form of building commercial towers has provided a pathway for construction to move towards a genuine zero carbon model. The production process produces zero waste and the timbers are sourced from certified sustainably managed forests.

CURRENT PROJECTS

Oriel Building has worked in partnership with Lend Lease Building to deliver the CLT structure located within the landmark Barangaroo precinct. The building will feature exposed timber structures designed to create a contemporary light filled work environment. Large glass facade panels will maximise natural daylight while sunshade on selected facade panels will reduce energy consumption; further reducing the buildings carbon footprint.

This project involved the design, fabrication and installation of over 1900 individual timber elements.

THE FUTURE

Oriel seeks to set the standard for commercial CLT buildings in Sydney. Moving forward we intend to use all the experience we have gained from our collaboration with Lend Lease at C1 to become industry leaders in the installation of Cross Laminated Timber.

THE HISTORY OF CLT

Cross laminated timber is the engineered wood of the future and is making the construction of entire buildings from timber a reality, but where did it come from? It was first developed in Switzerland during the 1970's and since then has been adopted by many countries in Europe. 

CLT is created by layering and glueing timber known as lamellas together with a grain that is alternated 90 degrees with each sheet. Wood that has been cross laminated in this manner has a much greater structural integrity as force is distributed evenly in all directions. The result of this increased structural integrity means that CLT panels can be used to form complete walls, floors and roofs.
